James is a red mix-traffic tender engine.
Bio
James is the No. 5 engine. On his first day, he was painted black and faulty brakes. Because of this, James was involved in a bad accident, but was later saved by Thomas. James often likes to boast about his red paintwork.

Trivia
- On James's HO Scale model, part of his smokebox is painted red instead of black. Also, the wheels and axleboxes are painted grey instead of black. A video from Bachmann confirms that in 2015, the errors on the HO James model will be rectified. However, the redesigned version will not be available before 2017.
- HO Scale James, Percy and Thomas are the only models produced by Bachmann that lack front coupling hooks.
- Both of James' models feature safety valves, similar to his Seasons 1-Thomas & the Magic Railroad model.
- James' HO scale model is the first engine to be redesigned by Bachmann.
